Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Elections are pivotal in shaping democratic governance, but they are often marred by the spread of misinformation, which undermines public trust and electoral integrity. Corporate communication plays a critical role in combating misinformation by fostering transparency, disseminating accurate information, and engaging stakeholders effectively. In Ibaji Local Government Area, Kogi State, the challenges posed by misinformation during elections are exacerbated by low media literacy and the proliferation of unverified content on social media platforms. Recent studies emphasize the need for strategic communication to counter misinformation and enhance voter confidence (Adekunle & Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines how corporate communication strategies can be utilized to prevent misinformation during elections, focusing on the role of media campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and public education.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Misinformation during elections remains a significant challenge in Ibaji, leading to voter apathy, mistrust in the electoral process, and heightened political tensions. Despite efforts by government agencies and civil society organizations, the lack of coordinated communication strategies hampers the effectiveness of these interventions. This study investigates how corporate communication can address the challenges of misinformation, ensuring a more transparent and credible electoral process.
